23CD0417 -  Zodiac Mountain - Live in America - cdr | $8

Early in the Summer of '06, Clay Ruby's Zodiac Mountain did a short U.S. tour, showering the people with roots rock, heavenly boogie, atmospheric spirituals, cryptic blues and the occasional classic cover tune. This incarnation of Zodiac Mountain was a collaboration between Clay Ruby and Wooden Wand, featuring jams with Nate Nelson (Mouthus, Religious Knives), Robert Beatty (Eyes and Arms of Smoke, Hair Police), and Maya Miller (Religious Knives, Double Leopards). 5 songs, over an hour of red, white and blue BLISS from two of the heaviest, gun toting, bourbon soaked, BBQ breath'd road warriors east of the Mississippi.

This material is a far departure from the intense heathen rituals and bleak folk songs of Zodiac Mountain's "Lake Winnebago" demos, and nothing like the newest Zodiac Mountain recording project in progress, which is wrapping itself
up like some kinda amphibious Crash Worship services.

Heard Gripe Hrusan collects together archival recordings made in Yorkshire between June 2004 and October 2005. Locales for the recordings include Little Almscliffe Crag, Ilkley Moor, the ruined church of Wharram Percy and the Thornborough Henges. XETB makes beautiful droning 'British primitive music' played with accordion, dulcimer, flutes, guitar, violin and banjo. XETB was formed in Summer 2001 at the prehistoric site of Men-an-Tol in Cornwall. Heard Gripe Hrusan will be the twelfth CDr release.

The follow up to their excellent debut cdr, the Mystery Water Saloon Boys is Phil Todd's vehicle for group workouts in atmospheric and psychedelic jams. This disc features the duo of Phil Todd (Ashtray Navigations) and Chris Hladowski (Scatter, Nalle) exploring everywhere from twisted deep space raga to edgy paranoid ramblings using strings, effects, voice, reeds, wind, and percussion all mixed and mangled onto a very damaged old tape deck.

Featuring a revolving cast of bay area upstarts and a pile of  freshly invented instruments This anthology is a twisting scrapbook of lost California baked noise antics and inverted musical dimensions.

Karl Bauer is the lone wizard behind this outfit transplanted from Brooklyn to Oakland. This disc is material from a more recent move between Oakland to San Francisco, during which there was a period of isolation and homelessness. For some of this time Karl managed to stay in a hotel where these pieces were recorded. Using his ritual tools of violin and decayed electronics, Karl elicits a new level of emotional psychedelia, of which this disc reveals captivating snapshots of these workings.

Sonic day dreamers from Ireland's Deserted Village collective, take things a few steps further outside with this release. Tranquil soundscapes are now assaulted and made dirty with profuse effects and madman mantra rants cycles. Still there is no mistaking this unit's aptitude in pastoral and elemental psychedelia, but this recording shows their beast in the full light of the sun.

Clay's Festering Lungs is folk noise solo joint of Clay Ruby, making stretch tones and dull flutters. Tape grime, dead batteries, slighted mantra from  insect heads, all followed by the towering and bright Claypipe. This is the duo of Anthony Milton (Seen Through, AM, the Nether Dawn, the mighty PseduoArcana label) and  Clayton Noone (CJA, Futurians, Armpit, and the always helpful Root Don Lonie for Cash label) transmitting their busted fuzz drench with limping piano tickle and guitar fade swimming in the mix. Touching vocals, you start to get it, then the tape stops.

the Davenport Family jams in the woods, in the barn, on the trail, in the pasture, around the campfire, and before the altar.  This two cdr set also features several excerpts from their three hour ritual held in Central Park this past fall. Featuring a few special guest stars and the usual fire that is always smoldering, this collection of moving snap shots is by far the most eclectic offering of Davenport's live improvisations to date.

The majestic full length debut from Pfeifer Sam is now out and was certainly well worth the wait. Anyone enticed by their all too short 'living rm, dining rm' ep must check this out. Pfeifer Sam has an expanded lineup and access to a whole new arsenal of sound sources on this disc. Jake Tibbs songwriting skills definitely come to the foreground on with this group of songs. Painstaking attention to detail has generated hallucinatory poems of social critique and dreamlike wonder. In between his words and melodies, every moment of music is jam packed with textural psychedelia and adept musicianship. Bringing to mind, Pet Sounds, Tom Waits, Van Dyke Parks, and Califone.

Klang Spectrum 2 is now available for all you sweethearts. Switching from the tranquil to the disturbing more than once, this comp surveys the wide spectrum of underground sound that is throbbing within the apartments, basements, and communal spaces in the city. Featuring stunning tracks from db Pedersen, Wyoming, Drunjus, Davenport, Candiru, and Nic Stage coupled with psychotic energy and fire from the likes of Metrocide, Right Arm Severed, Mumber Toes, Orphan Cocktail, and Loop Retard. This compilation is well worth having, and includes hilarious commentary on the local scene from Karen Eliot.

db Pedersen finally graces us with a proper disc of his live material. Unfortunately the third world demons using db as an avatar have only made themselves known in the darker corners of the Madison underground. Now his chant and scream is available for mass consumption and possession. Using only microphones and a simple effects rig, db takes the listener through fields of cicadas and birds, caves that are habitats of Tuvan demons, and oceans of flute dances and looped alien mantra, all live. Highly recommended.

Loop Ret@rd follows up his debut with the equally disturbing "Scum World."  This time the Ret@rd chops up crappy homemade punk and noisecore tapes to create a menacing barrage of noise loop madness. Luckily only 20 minutes long, this little number will have your neighbors calling the cops and your girlfriend leaving from someone who plays "real" instruments. Looks like the slimline cassette deck is not as glamorous as Loop Ret@rd makes it seem.

Anla Courtis is part of the amazing Argentinean music project Reynols. The sounds on this disc are unlike anything Courtis has done in the past. All sounds are composed and created using fractal music generators. The music is cascading electronic wash over the menacing ebb and flow of broken melody lines and scattered musical shards. Very strange and psychedelic, in which sense it is similar to his previous work, but certainly Courtis is navigating new and interesting sonic territory with this piece.

The mysterious Mumber Toes reports that he was hardly  in the room for the making of this piece. The sounds recorded are changes in the electrical field around two very sensitive and specialized microphones. However the resulting sounds make for a lot more than just interesting textures. Abstract electronic melodies find their way twisting through rhythms and explosions of squelched static and bubbles and pops.

This is the first release in our series of  recordings from Glitch, the weekly experimental music showcase, held at the Speed Jump Java Joint in Madison. This installment features Craig Microcassette System. This short performance was their first live outing, using only four microcassette players to generate all their no-fi bliss. The performance is riddled with found sounds, field recordings, bizarre stolen private recordings making layers of noisy chaos.
