- Zodiac Mountain -
Live in America - cdr |
$8
Early in the
Summer of '06, Clay Ruby's Zodiac Mountain did a short U.S. tour,
showering the people with roots rock, heavenly boogie, atmospheric
spirituals, cryptic blues and the occasional classic cover tune.
This incarnation of Zodiac Mountain was a collaboration between
Clay Ruby and Wooden Wand, featuring jams with Nate Nelson (Mouthus,
Religious Knives), Robert Beatty (Eyes and Arms of Smoke, Hair
Police),
and Maya Miller (Religious Knives, Double Leopards). 5 songs, over
an hour of red, white and blue BLISS from two of the heaviest, gun
toting,
bourbon soaked, BBQ breath'd road warriors east of the
Mississippi.
This material is a far departure from the intense heathen rituals
and bleak folk songs of Zodiac Mountain's "Lake Winnebago" demos,
and nothing like the newest Zodiac Mountain recording project in
progress, which is wrapping itself
up like some kinda amphibious Crash Worship services.

- Zodiac Mountain -
Lake Winnebago - cdr | $8
This is the Zodiac speaking. A collection of early demos from the primal beginnings of the Zodiac Mountain, a grateful underground process of young and ready saints. Lake Winnebago holds beautiful songs colliding with twisted jams, all at the edges of their wits, from gone down too long in the Zone.

- CJA - Wolfskullage
- cdr | $8
Mutant toxic shock and blown-skull get togetherers. Our favorite Armpit mutiny, New Zealand's mighty CJA is a blistering full on live band this time around. Freedom jams up the works, all six barrels are loaded and fired, backfired refried tape hell mastered the sheer joy tone poems of the Wolfskull age.

XETB makes beautiful droning 'British primitive music' played with accordion, dulcimer, flutes, guitar, violin and banjo. XETB was formed in Summer 2001 at the prehistoric site of Men-an-Tol in Cornwall. Heard Gripe Hrusan will be the twelfth CDr release.

- Mystery Water Saloon Boys - Hosepipe Spitoon - cdr | $8
| LE 143
The follow up to their excellent debut cdr, the Mystery Water Saloon Boys is Phil Todd's vehicle for group workouts in atmospheric and psychedelic jams. This disc features the duo of Phil Todd (Ashtray Navigations) and Chris Hladowski (Scatter, Nalle) exploring everywhere from twisted deep space raga to edgy paranoid ramblings using strings, effects, voice, reeds, wind, and percussion all mixed and mangled onto a very damaged old tape deck.
23CS800410 -
Clay's Festering Lungs - Raven's Hyke - 2x c40 | $10
Long awaited collection from heavy sessions in the tomb, same sessions that bore "Silver Skull". All out medicine worship, oily secretions of black sunshine to dampen your hollow bones. 80 minutes thick with whirlwind of mangled audio snapshots, healing rituals, analog psychosis treatment, massaging the dump.
23CD0409 - ISM
- Robert Horton 1979-1991 - CDR | $8
We met Robert Horton in the bay area last Winter. He came up after the show and said the show reminded him of some old jams of his from 1979, etc. A couple months later this disc shows up in the mail featuring the crawling mutant improv of Ism along with several other projects involving Horton, spanning all throughout the 1980's. Featuring a revolving cast of bay area upstarts and a pile of freshly invented instruments This anthology is a twisting scrapbook of lost California baked noise antics and inverted musical dimensions.

Toes - Still Karen Eliot after all these years - cdr
in jewelcase | $8

full-length. 3 tracks that run the gamut of hir artistry, from spaced out

23CS1200406 - V/A
- Forced Womanhood - 2x 60min cassettes | $12 |
limited to 150
It took us over two years to put together this
masterpiece in perversion. Two hours of brutal power electronics and heavy
industrial
noise, all based on the lovely theme of emasuculation as sexual fetish. That's
right, we've got all your favorites in audio terrorism
contemplating their own joyful castration... featuring Cleanse (Hive Mind), Clew
of Theseus, Prurient, Karlheinz, Eugenics Council, Black Leather Jesus, Survival
Unit, V.D. (Sickness), the Viodre, Prosexist, Panicsville, and many more.
23CD0405 -
Axolotl - Sad Hotel - 3" CDR | $6 | limited to
100
Karl Bauer is the lone wizard behind this outfit transplanted from Brooklyn to Oakland. This disc is material from a more recent move between Oakland to San Francisco, during which there was a period of isolation and homelessness. For some of this time Karl managed to stay in a hotel where these pieces were recorded. Using his ritual tools of violin and decayed electronics, Karl elicits a new level of emotional psychedelia, of which this disc reveals captivating snapshots of these workings.
23CD0402 - United
Bible Studies - Solar Observatory - CDR | $8
Sonic day dreamers from Ireland's Deserted Village collective, take things a few steps further outside with this release. Tranquil soundscapes are now assaulted and made dirty with profuse effects and madman mantra rants cycles. Still there is no mistaking this unit's aptitude in pastoral and elemental psychedelia, but this recording shows their beast in the full light of the sun.
23CS400323
- Sword Heaven - Horsing - 40m cassette | $5
Crude and scathing new beast from Ohio's own dirty savages Sword Heaven. Torturous random battery and creeping electric mantra featuring a screwed down version on the B side. Made in limited editions with art screen by the SH's breaded madman Aaron.
23CS300322
- Clay's Festering Lungs / Claypipe - split C30 | $5 |
limited to 73
Long awaited smokers delight. This haze of psychedelic mash is just what the springtime needed. Now everything is extra blurry. Clay's Festering Lungs is folk noise solo joint of Clay Ruby, making stretch tones and dull flutters. Tape grime, dead batteries, slighted mantra from insect heads, all followed by the towering and bright Claypipe. This is the duo of Anthony Milton (Seen Through, AM, the Nether Dawn, the mighty PseduoArcana label) and Clayton Noone (CJA, Futurians, Armpit, and the always helpful Root Don Lonie for Cash label) transmitting their busted fuzz drench with limping piano tickle and guitar fade swimming in the mix. Touching vocals, you start to get it, then the tape stops.
23CD0321
- Davenport Family - Field Tales - 2xCDR | $15 |
limited to 123
the Davenport Family jams in the woods, in the barn, on the trail, in the pasture, around the campfire, and before the altar. This two cdr set also features several excerpts from their three hour ritual held in Central Park this past fall. Featuring a few special guest stars and the usual fire that is always smoldering, this collection of moving snap shots is by far the most eclectic offering of Davenport's live improvisations to date.
23CD0320
- Wolfmangler / Wolfskull - split CDR | $8 | limited to 98
SOLD OUT
Wolfmangler is the newest project by Smolken's graveyard crew (formerly known as
Dead Raven Choir) as a bestial string quartet. Wolfskull is Clayton Noone (CJA,

heavy wierdness.
23CS900319
- Exegene - clockwork insects have invaded the end time -
C90 | $5 | limited to 43
Epic death drone work outs, from local mystery. i only met him for five minutes
once when he handed me these tapes and said "here this is for you to put out on
23 if you want." Alien loner heavy tone bending and texture mangle add up to and
hour and a half of massive skull bust.
Recommended.

- Loop Ret@rd - mom says I make special music + dad says keep the
bass turned down - 2xCDR + mini comic book | $15 | limited to

After two incredible and dynamic 3" cdrs and a
slew of highly limited cassette, Loop Retard finally throws down his first full
length, readily
available to the masses. This is noise loop pool of filth. Broken hip beats, snot
nosed electronics and awkward delirium make up each disc,
one dedicated to Mom and the other to Dad. Each disc has it's own special
message and reward. Includes and screwed up comic by the master retard himself.
23CD0315
- The Skaters - Rippling Whispers - CDR | $8

23CD0313
- Davenport - Tongue of Bear - CDR | $8
| limited to 100
This magnetic shaman scribble is perhaps the most cryptic transmission from the Davenport Family to date. Originally released on Nature Tape Limb in a very limited edition, 23 has released an edition of 100 of this march of mice and dreaming trolls.
23CS800311
- Dan Woodman - In the Beach - cassette | $5 | limited to 50
Dan Woodman recorded strange sounds while in the beach. Cryptic field recordings and silent meditations. Handmade packages by Woodman.
23CD0310 - Craig Microcassette System
- 3.14.03 - 3"CDR $6
The newest artifact from the dynamic duo of audio decay. Craig treated us to this bit while opening for Wolf Eyes a couple years back. Maybe that's the reason for the random blasts of feedback on this one... Anyway, if you've heard this pair do their thing, then you probably were hoping for more and here it is. Davenport Family's own Endless and Deathfield bring us the frantic sounds of everything filtered through a half dozen microcassette recorders and presented to you live and in the raw.
23CD0307-

23CD0219 - Uton
- Retrohumanoid - 3"CDR $6
Uton is a one man folk-noise unit from Finland.
His 3" cdr for 23 Productions is one of his finest journeys into the subconcious
black forest.
Recorded on May 1st, these sounds include shifting noisescapes and polyrhythmic
plucking, blurred drones, soft conjuring, and deep meditations, the best in late
night headphone trips.
23CD0213
- Bruce Carkiss - Where's My Silver Pinecone - CDR
$8 limited to 50 copies
Joy! It's the wonder twins of antique technology and backwoods drunken clatter, hailing from East Troy, Wisconsin. This disc is recorded at the old abandoned school house, and it is about 50 minutes of total chaos, garbage in, Bruce Carkiss out. That's Dave and Greg, fine Wisconsin Noise!!!
23CD0210 - Mumber
Toes - Aati - 3" CDR $6
Taken from an extremely touching and intense show at 2310MMF, this Mumber Toes set is one of his usual trips into the world of vibrators, hair clippers, electric can openers, scrap metal, microphones, feedback, and pudding. Highly Recommended!
23CD0206
- Craig Microcassette System - #6 - 3" CDR $6
The second offering from local no fi heroes Craig Microcassette System, #6 is another long improvised piece of layered tape hiss and crumble with found and/or stolen sounds, distorted field recordings, fragmented memories, broken toys, and chance garbage harmony.
23CD0204
- Pfeifer Sam - Flower Garland School - CDR $10
The majestic full length debut from Pfeifer Sam is now out and was certainly well worth the wait. Anyone enticed by their all too short 'living rm, dining rm' ep must check this out. Pfeifer Sam has an expanded lineup and access to a whole new arsenal of sound sources on this disc. Jake Tibbs songwriting skills definitely come to the foreground on with this group of songs. Painstaking attention to detail has generated hallucinatory poems of social critique and dreamlike wonder. In between his words and melodies, every moment of music is jam packed with textural psychedelia and adept musicianship. Bringing to mind, Pet Sounds, Tom Waits, Van Dyke Parks, and Califone.
23CD0203
- V/A - Klang Spectrum 2: A compilation of underground music from
Madison - CDR $8 (February 14, 2004)
Klang Spectrum 2 is now available for all you sweethearts. Switching from the tranquil to the disturbing more than once, this comp surveys the wide spectrum of underground sound that is throbbing within the apartments, basements, and communal spaces in the city. Featuring stunning tracks from db Pedersen, Wyoming, Drunjus, Davenport, Candiru, and Nic Stage coupled with psychotic energy and fire from the likes of Metrocide, Right Arm Severed, Mumber Toes, Orphan Cocktail, and Loop Retard. This compilation is well worth having, and includes hilarious commentary on the local scene from Karen Eliot.
23CD0202
- db Pedersen - Live at Mother Fool's - CDR $8
db Pedersen finally graces us with a proper disc of his live material. Unfortunately the third world demons using db as an avatar have only made themselves known in the darker corners of the Madison underground. Now his chant and scream is available for mass consumption and possession. Using only microphones and a simple effects rig, db takes the listener through fields of cicadas and birds, caves that are habitats of Tuvan demons, and oceans of flute dances and looped alien mantra, all live. Highly recommended.
23CD0123
- Loop Ret@rd - Scum World - 3" CDR $6
Loop Ret@rd follows up his debut with the equally disturbing "Scum World." This time the Ret@rd chops up crappy homemade punk and noisecore tapes to create a menacing barrage of noise loop madness. Luckily only 20 minutes long, this little number will have your neighbors calling the cops and your girlfriend leaving from someone who plays "real" instruments. Looks like the slimline cassette deck is not as glamorous as Loop Ret@rd makes it seem.
23CD0121 - Anla Courtis - Fractal Albur Solenoide -
3" CDR $6
Anla Courtis is part of the amazing Argentinean music project Reynols. The sounds on this disc are unlike anything Courtis has done in the past. All sounds are composed and created using fractal music generators. The music is cascading electronic wash over the menacing ebb and flow of broken melody lines and scattered musical shards. Very strange and psychedelic, in which sense it is similar to his previous work, but certainly Courtis is navigating new and interesting sonic territory with this piece.
23CS2400120 - V/A - Music For Teeth - 4
cassettes $23
After much delay and struggle, 23 Productions is proud to present Music For Teeth, a 4x 60 min cassette compilation of Madison Underground noise and experimentation. Each artist gets their own 30 min side. The compilation features: Metrocide, Mumber Toes, Right Arm Severed, Craig Microcassette System, Super Jack, Analog Weapon, Mansfield Deathtrap Rerecordings, and Loop Retard. The compilation comes packaged handmade, and is in a limited edition of 23.
23CS600117 - Metrocide - Logos -CS
$5
Throbbing, insane harsh noise from Metrocide,
harsh noise unit of Clay Ruby from Madison, WI. This cassette will rattle your
castle. Limited edition of 45.
23CD0115 - Garage Indians - Indian Summer - CDR $8
Engaging outsider stomp and howl from these
genuine Wisconsin country folk. Mastered to microcassette and blasting tribal
blues, ritual slobbering soul breakdowns, tape cut ups, twisted folk noodles,
and abstractions free of inhibition or depth perception.
What a great
summer.
23CD0112 - Metrocide/Pedestrian Deposit - s/t -
CDR $8
Split release with Monorail Trespassing. One remix of source material from each, and one solo track; the PD track being an example of 'urban-noir electronics' while his remix of Metrocide attempts to turn down the noise, allowing for one quick blast, then dwelling in the teeth grinding murk while shaping narrative flow and loops out of the Metrocrap. The Metrocide track is slow mounting, seething harshness and the Metrocide remix of PD is chopped-to-death audio cruelty.
23CD0110 - Loop Ret@rd - Toy Monster - 3" CDR $6
Debut release from Madison slimline terrorist and sample pimp. This disc is more like a sampling of the kind of flowing and funky plunderphonics that Loop Retard is known for. Totally retarded!
23CD0109 - Mumber Toes - Anonche - 3" CDR
$6
Captured live at Glitch 2, Mumber Toes blasts his way through two pieces of broken guitar and vibrator noise. While his equipment is cutting in and out, Mumber Toes manifests one piece of high pitched squelch and scream, then another of bottomed out drone and rumble.
23CD0103 - Mumber Toes - Apeiron - 3"CDR $6
The mysterious Mumber Toes reports that he was hardly in the room for the making of this piece. The sounds recorded are changes in the electrical field around two very sensitive and specialized microphones. However the resulting sounds make for a lot more than just interesting textures. Abstract electronic melodies find their way twisting through rhythms and explosions of squelched static and bubbles and pops.
23CD16 - JoAnne Powers - Conflicts of
Interest - 7 tracks, 62 min, CDR $8
JoAnne Powers presents a live performance of saxophone abuse and piano dissection with the recordings from a show she played with Clay Ruby at the King's Foot Gallery. Also included are two bonus tracks of live improv violence recorded live at Glitch with members of Organon and Endless.
23CD12 - Viodre - Disgust (Heat ov the Day) -
CDR $8
Conceptual and violent noise from the head of Kalifornialoveaddiction Records with two bonus remixes by Metrocide. Viodre is at the forefront of modern american noise. Disc comes folded in wood block-printed paper with a wax seal.
23CD10 - Richard Ramirez - Take a Breath and Try
Again - 2 tracks, CDR $8
Noise veteran and Deadline Recordings head Richard Ramirez (Black Leather Jesus, Priest In Shit, Werewolf Jerusalem, many many more) re-releases a project formerly called Last Rape. This piece is a throbbing noise scape that is almost tranquil in it's repetition, with subtle changes and distorted textures throughout.
23CD09 - Metrocide VS JoAnne Powers - s/t -
5 tracks, CDR $8
Violent free jazz processed in real time by noise artist Metrocide, Powers plays Alto and Tenor sax and Trumpet, while Metrocide forces the cacophony through various distortion and effects to produce these sessions of psychotic and psychedelic noise.
23CD06 - Craig Microcassette System - 3.24.02 -
1 track, 24 min, 3"CDR $6
This is the first release in our series of recordings from Glitch, the weekly experimental music showcase, held at the Speed Jump Java Joint in Madison. This installment features Craig Microcassette System. This short performance was their first live outing, using only four microcassette players to generate all their no-fi bliss. The performance is riddled with found sounds, field recordings, bizarre stolen private recordings making layers of noisy chaos.
